Saturday on Substack - 10.VI.2023 - The "What Day is it Again?" Edition
Note: As I was writing this last night, hoping to be able to hit “publish” before midnight, my eyes closed and when I opened them again, this editor was still open, but I had a page-full of the letter “f” where my finger had hit the key, and apparently, I was too tired to raise it. At that point, I asked myself if it really was wise to send the post, as when I get to that stage of tired, I don’t make sense anymore talking, much less writing!
It feels so weird to actually be writing again. The kids are out of school, which has been a blessing, for the most part, as it means that I’m not spending two of the first hours of the day working on getting them going. I’ve been trying to get things in the house in better order, but it’s incredibly slow going. All I need to do is leave something “done” but not put away for someone to knock it down or spill something on it or what have you. We’re also still at a point where we’re losing stuff in the chaos, which drives me more than a little crazy.
I had last week’s post about halfway done before I fell asleep on it, and I kind of let it slide since then. I haven’t posted much on Wordpress either; I know that it would be best to have more of a schedule with the kids and the house and all, but it’s something I really struggle with for various reasons.
In any case, I have a number of things from both last week and this week, so without further ado, here I go!
Writing
I am quite remiss in writing these last couple of weeks, but I’ve posted a bit.
Reading
I’ve been reading Rod Dreher’s Substack faithfully for a few months now. A lot of his posts are fantanstic, as is the following conversation, but I usually don’t link directly because virtually all of his stuff is for subscribers only. He’s had some recent posts about time and memory, and this one, particularly near the end, hits on some perspectives that I have been pondering, especially as it relates to “redeeming the time”, pulling together past and future, and aiming for the timelessness of eternity in God’s love. (last week)
It’s weird when the comments in Rod Dreher’s Substack end up hitting on the same topic - joy - that Naomi Wolf posts. (last week)
A bit about hearing loss (last week)
Self-driving cars in 2023 (last week)
Monday was Memorial Day. This is definitely worth the read: (last week)
This is a tribute to Norman Borlaug which was written in 2009, and is still an amazing piece of writing about an amazing man: Farm Boy. (last week)
Gladsome Lights: Daily duties and Daily Bread (R.L. Stevenson)
Pleximama: The Finish Line
John Kass: Would Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson let his Daughter Ride the CTA?
Books
I still need to finish Joy Corey’s “The Tools of Spiritual Warfare”. However, I was doing some genealogy research, and I found “Turtle Lake, North Dakota, 50th Anniversary” through Familysearch. So amazed and thankful that I could look through that online!
Watching
Take Five - Music in 5/4 (last week)
I also watched the Alfred Hitchcock/Cary Grant/Ingrid Bergman film Notorious, and can be found here: (last week)
So, where are we going today? (last week)
Rick Beato on AI in music
Laugh a Little
(I absolutely love how they have so much respect for each other through chess!)
Music
The Beatles - AI version … Actually, this is quite the topic right now, and the video that I wanted to include has been made private.
I have learned…
How middle-high German may have sounded
that the upside-down stars on many headstones are not pentagrams, but symbols for the Order of the Eastern Star
Nicky Hopkins was absolutely amazing https://ultimateclassicrock.com/15-classics-nicky-hopkins/ (Okay, I already knew that, but I didn’t know he played the piano part on the Beatles’ song “Revolution” and is one of the few people who played with all four Beatles in their solo careers.)
Recipes
Cranberry-Walnut-Wild Rice Salad - I made this for a party last week. I did not go to said party, so I only got a taste, but I thought it’s worth trying again.
Homemade nacho dip - I put this together myself; the kids love it!
Ingredients: 1 lb Velveeta cheese loaf 1 can (12 oz) evaporated milk 1/8 tsp Dave's Gourmet insanity sauce Instructions: In a microwave-safe mixing bowl, cube Velveeta loaf into 1/2in cubes. Add evaporated milk and insanity sauce. Stir. Microwave for 3 minutes. Stir. Microwave and stir periodically until cheese chunks are melted (or almost melted). Let sauce sit for 3 minutes, and stir again. Serve. (I like the insanity sauce because it is hot sauce that is not peppery. However, it is very, very hot, and a very small amount goes a long way.)
Listening
I don’t recall having listened to much these last couple of weeks. If anything, it was probably Abbot Tryphon or Jordan Peterson. It’s just been hard to keep up.
Miscellaneous
I posted this on Tuesday on Wordpress, bt these people are friends and they would definitely appreciate any help: https://www.givesendgo.com/weigandcudahy
