Welcome back to Saturday! It’s been a very spring-like week here, even with some overnight lows in the 40s.

Writing

I’ve got more stuff in my head, but again it’s been a busy week! Penultimate week of the school year, and there are just a ton of things going on.

  • Sunday Gratitude - 14.V.2023 - Mother’s Day

  • Wordless Wednesday #30 - Tiny Life

  • Spring of Cary - Operation Petticoat

  • I Never Knew You

Wordpress is now offering paywalls and subscriptions with paid accounts. I wonder if it is to keep “serious” writers from defecting over here.

    Hanging By My Nose
A brother asked a hermit, ‘Suppose there are two monks: one stays quietly in his cell, fasting for six days at a time, laying many hardships on himself: and the other ministers to the sick. Which of them is more pleasing to God?’ He replied, ‘Even if the brother who fasts six days hung himself up by his nose, he wouldn’t be the equal of him who minister…

  • A bit on Roger Miller, whose music I was listening to before I was even a day old.

Word & Song by Anthony Esolen
    "King of the Road"
Today I write knowing that Sometimes a Song can turn into an earworm. Well, there are plenty of worse earworms to have than that ode to hobos, “King of the Road,” composed by one of the busiest and most versatile and clever songwriters of the second half of the 20th century. Roger Miller was a country & western singer/songwriter — sort of — with a difference: his songs as often as not “went viral,” as we now describe it — commandeering the airwaves in the North and South, in America and abroad, attracting fans of all sorts of music. And he achieved all of his success with little education and less (formal) musical training, just a very quirky mind that percolated constantly with song lyrics and catchy tunes. Think of him, perhaps, as the Robin Williams of American Song. Reportedly, when Miller lived in Nashville, songwriters would follow him around and just hang out with him, because, according to his then-manager, every word that came out of his mouth was “a potential song.” M…

Watching

I don’t know that I’ve watched anything particularly “deep” this week. The time has been lacking, at the very least. I have been interested in what comes up with “

  • Let the speedrunning commence! (I remember this guy from the Breath of the Wild days!)

  • Mety333 is back - I remember watching him for hours doing silly things with Breath of the Wild

  • DeSantis makes it illegal for Link to wear Gerudo outfit in Florida https://babylonbee.com/news/desantis-makes-it-illegal-for-link-to-wear-gerudo-outfit-in-florida - For those not familiar, Gerudo-town in the world of the Legend of Zelda is a town where only women are allowed, so if Link wants to sneak in, he’s got to dress as a woman. I’m not thrilled with that storyline, but the story in the Babylon Bee is hilarious!

Music

I heard this for the first time this week - “Live Like You’re Loved” by Hawk Nelson

The Avett Brothers - “I Never Knew You”

A little bit of Roger Miller - I started looking for something here, and ended up going through a bunch of Roger Miller songs. He’s probably one of the last great “novelty” artists, though not all his music was comedy. This is from Disney’s “Robin Hood”:

I hope that all of you have had a beautiful weeks!
